Neyzen Tevfik daha 19'undayken, 1898'de, babası medrese öğrenimi için, sonradan şeyhülislâm olacak olan Musa Kâzım Efendi'nin yanına, İstanbul'a gönderir onu. Musa Kâzım Efendi, onu, Fatih'teki Fethiye Medresesi'ne yerleştirir. Ama Neyzen Tevfik, medrese eğitimi ve ortamı ile bağdaşmaz. Zamanını daha çok Galata ve Yenikapı Mevlevihaneleri'nde geçirir. Bu arada Mehmet Akif Ersoy'la tanışır. Akif, dönemin seçkin müzisyen ve edebiyatçıları ile tanışmasını sağlar.

1901 yılında, medrese giyimi olan cübbe ve şalvar yerine Akif'in verdiği setre pantolonu giymesi, akşamları medrese dışında kalması ileri-geri konuşmalara yol açınca, Fethiye Medresesi'nden ayrılır ve Fatih'te şekerci Hanı'nda tuttuğu bir odada yaşamaya başlar. Daha sonra da Çukurçeşme'deki Ali Bey Hanı'na yerleşir.
